STUDENT CONFIDENCE IN SKILLS DEVELOPMENT – Sonali Misra

Mapping Student Skills Development and Learning

Sonali Misra

Research question: Does enabling students to map their skills and knowledge development through a course aid their confidence and reinforce the Unit’s learning objectives?

The Project –

This took place during a new unit on creative writing for magazine journalism. Students answered short skills and knowledge Mapping surveys in the first and last class of the Unit, with a reflective mid touchpoint. The self-audits at the start and finish were quick to do and could be visualised.

*Mapping 1: I generated customised reports with radar charts to emphasise areas students feel confident and areas they can improve upon

*A mid-unit touch point – I used a 4 points hand out for students to fill in, outlining what things they were enjoying, felt nervous of etc.

*Mapping 2: I generated customised reports with radar charts to showcase their growth as they review their development in a visual format. Personalised feedback emphasised areas students can improve upon through rest of their UAL journey and professionally

WHAT WORKED – DIDN’T WORK

NEXT STEPS

Students showed consistent growth in the SKM mapping, thus implying that their confidence has been boosted. It was an effective visual way to show students that they had developed their skillset through a unit.

This can be further emphasised in the next iteration through 1-on-1 chats with students about their reports to gauge their confidence levels and understanding of how the teaching addressed the Unit Learning Objectives

This can also be used to link to the next unit – as students reflect and create new targets as their learning journey evolves.
